...a fierce group of musical entities that must be acknowledged. [Their] sole desire is to play great music, mindful of their roots, ever looking forward and always joyful: a real “mezcla.

U.S. Tour 2014

On the heels of a series of sizzling concerts on their 2013 US Summer tour including packed houses at Yoshi’s Oakland and Old Town School in Chicago, the all-star ensemble led by guitarist Pablo “Mezcla” Menéndez prepares to hit the road again in 2014 after a nice long stretch at home where they just played a special concert at Havana’s Jazz Plaza 2013 celebrating the release of their brand new live concert DVD. Mezcla’s current sound emphasizes their roots in rumba and Yoruba rhythms and is the result of a special chemistry between Afro-Cuban babalao priest and conga/batá drum master, Octavio Rodríguez; celebrated super-percussionist Roberto Smith "El Capitán"; veteran bass-monster Jose Hermida, multi-instrumental wizard Julio Valdés and the maestro, Pablo Menéndez on guitar and vocals.

There's a train a comin' and its whistling M-E-Z-C-L-A."

Under the direction of guitarist Pablo Menendez, Mezcla has been a part of the sound-track of the Cuban music scene for the past thirty years. Mezcla brings together several veteran masters with some the best of young players on the scene today. When at home in Cuba they perform regularly at Havana's premier jazz club La Zorra y el Cuervo and at the annual Havana Jazz Festival (Jazz Plaza). Mezcla's music is a genuine celebration of the culture and musical roots of the Pearl of the Antilles. A ray of Havana sunshine that inspired Carlos Santana to call them “the cleanest, freshest water I have ever tasted!" Their legendary 1993 release “Cantos” featured the late Lázaro Ros, one of Cuba's foremost singers of Afro-Cuban Yoruba santería chants. Their CD "Akimba!," was nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2002 and their latest release, “I'll See You in C-U-B-A,” (ZOHO), was nominated for the Best of Latin Jazz Awards 2010 as were several of the group's soloists. In 2014 Mezcla released live concert DVD “Pablo Menendez & Mezcla Todos Estrellas del Jazz Cubano” (Colibri), they re-released the “Cantos” and they are currently in the process of finalizing a CD of their 2013 live performance at Yoshi's, Oakland.
